THE FOSSILS: THE FOSSIL RECORD

Longtime Pacific Northwest favorites, the Fossils have carved out a niche as one of the most entertaining and enjoyable traditional bluegrass bands around. If there's a traditional music around these parts, chances are that they've played it. For those of us who have enjoyed their performances over the years, The Fossil Record is a welcome addition to our musical collections. Joining them on several numbers is Vivian Williams, whose fiddling prowess need not be explained to anyone who reads the pages of this publication. The Fossil Record captures the Fossils as you would hear them live. Their tunes come not from the contemporary sources of today's bluegrass, but from the pioneers. Folks like the Monroe Brothers, the Dillards, Rose Maddox, Reno & Smiley, and more are covered on this album. On the Dillard's classic instrumental "Hickory Hollow," banjo player Bill Scott teams with mandolin player Doug Bright to give it the same energy heard on the original version. In a world of modern styles, it is important to remember and appreciate where we have come from. In this light, the traditional bluegrass sound of the Fossils rings true. *****

The Fossils are a down-to-earth bluegrass band from Everett, Wash., consisting of Doug Bright (fiddle, mandolin, and vocals), Belle Chenault (bass and vocals), Barry (guitar and vocals) and Bill Scott (banjo, guitar and vocals). The band's latest recording project consists of 16 invigorating performances that will definitely enhance the band's musical reputation. With exception of a trio of Barry Brower originals ("Winter Blues," " My Carolina Darling," and "Lost In This World Without You"), "The Fossil Record" features familiar numbers like "Bye Bye Love," "Roses In The Snow," "Lamplighting Time In The Valley," "Country Boy Rock N' Roll," and "Sweethearts In Heaven." The band has also opted to include several lesser-known numbers like "Dreaming," "I'll Take A Chance On Loving You," and "Time Nor Tide." In summation, "The Fossil Record" is a captivating musical undertaking featuring a remarkable array of skill and dexterity. (Bluegrass Unlimited)
